Daniel N Eisendrath: A Text-Book of Clinical Anatomy : For Students and Practitioners (Classic Reprint)

A Text-Book of Clinical Anatomy : For Students and Practitioners (Classic Reprint)

Description

Excerpt from A Text-Book of Clinical Anatomy: For Students and Practitioners Many changes have taken place in the leaching of anatomy during the past twenty years. The rapid development of the various branches of practical medicine and surgery has necessitated a most thorough preparation in the fundamental subjects, such as anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and pathology. In the majority of our medical schools descriptive anatomy accompanied by dissections is taught during the first two years, and then the student feels that he may consider anatomy a closed chapter. In but few of the colleges is he taught to take a perspective view, or, in other words, to study Regional or Topographic Anatomy. He has spent many hours in the memorizing of nerves, arteries, veins, and the description of viscera, but he is unable to apply this knowledge to clinical work. The primary object of this book is to serve as a bridge for both practitioner and student from the descriptive anatomy, as it is usually taught in the first two years of a medical course, to its daily application at the bedside, in the clinic, or in the operating room. The term "Clinical Anatomy" seemed to be the most appropriate one to use to express the larger field which the subject covers. The term was first employed in this sense by Dr. A. D. Bevan, to convey the fact that clinical anatomy is anatomical knowledge as applied to every branch of clinical work - i. e., not only medicine and surgery in the narrower sense, but all the specialties. In teaching this subject to third year medical students the author felt the need of a text-book which should cover not only the surgical but also the medical portion of the subject, and he hopes that the work will not be found to have been written from the standpoint of the surgeon alone. An especial attempt has been made to encourage both practitioners and students to examine the normal human body during life, to palpate and outline structures, and to study the relations of nerves, vessels, viscera, etc., the knowledge of whose position is indispensable to every one engaged in the practice of medicine. Explorations in History and Globalization

Description

Considering the ways in which the 'global turn' is changing the theory and practice of historical disciplines, Explorations in History and Globalization engages with the concept and methodology of globalization, challenging traditional divisions of space and time to offer a range of perspectives on how globalization has affected social, economic, political and cultural history. Each chapter covers a specific theme, discussing how globalization has shaped these themes and how they have contributed to globalization throughout history. Including topics such as ecological exchanges, trade, exchanges of knowledge, migration, empire and urbanization, this volume both explains historical trajectories through a global analytical framework and provides tools that students can employ when posing their own research questions about historical globalization. Containing suggestions for further reading and guidance on the ways in which primary source material can be used as a basis for global historical studies, this is the ideal volume for all students interested in the global exchanges between people throughout history.

Eugene H Peterson,Peter Santucci: Practice Resurrection: Study Guide

Practice Resurrection: Study Guide

Description

Though bringing people to new birth in Christ through evangelism is essential, says Peterson, isn't it obvious that"growth in Christ"is equally essential? Yet the American church does not treat Christian growth and character formation with equivalent urgency. We are generally uneasy with the quiet, obscure conditions in which growth takes place, and building maturity in Christ too often gets relegated to footnote status in the text of our lives. In"Practice Resurrection"Peterson brings the voice of Scripture -- especially Paul's letter to the Ephesians -- and the voice of the contemporary Christian congregation together to unpack what it means to fully grow up "to the stature of Christ." Peterson's robust discussion will move readers to restore transformed Christian character to the center of their lives. This helpful study guide is designed to enable small groups in schools or churches -- or even individuals -- to delve deeper into the timely wisdom of"Practice Resurrection: A Conversation on Growing Up in Christ." Peter Santucci here breaks up Peterson's book into thirteen "sessions," each of which contains a summary, select quotes to consider, questions for interaction, and a prayer drawn from the text of Ephesians that is covered in the corresponding book chapter."

Dido Twite is waylaid by her father, the shady Abednego Twite, acting on instructions from his evil patron. Why is Dido so urgently needed in Wapping? Why are King Richard's friends all accidentally drowning in the Thames? How does hard-drinking Mrs Lily Bloodvessel figure in this intricate plot, with her cellar full of sleeping guttersnipes? Another rollercoasting story by Joan Aiken, in which Dido's scheming Pa finally receives his comeuppance. - Thousands of place names including towns and natural features; detailed place names index Lewis Hamilton's explosive arrival on the Formula 1 scene has made front-page headlines. In My Story, for the first time Lewis opens up about his stunning debut season in grand prix racing, as well as his dad Anthony, his home life and his early years. The only book with the real story, as told by Lewis. In his first season in F1, Lewis Hamilton thrilled the world of motor racing by finishing on the podium in his first nine consecutive races - the first driver to do so in the sport's 57-year history - and drove to victories in Canada, America, Hungary and Japan. But bare statistics alone do scant justice to the amazing impact Lewis Hamilton has had on the sporting landscape. My Story gives the real account from Lewis himself, as he sets the record straight about his colourful life on and off the track. Given a grounded upbringing by his dedicated Practice Resurrection: Study Guide free pdf father in unremarkable Stevenage, Lewis tells about how he first tried out go-karting while on a cut-price family holiday in Ibiza.

James: The NIV Application Commentary from Biblical Test...to Contemporary Life

Description

Straight to the point, practical, affirming, convicting-that's the book of James. In it, we see a picture of early Christians wrestling to apply the teachings of Jesus to their everyday lives. And we see a community plagued by divisiveness and hypocrisy, with an emphasis on wealth and status. James pulls no punches addressing these issues, calling for a faith that shows itself in moral actions: in speech, in interpersonal relationships, in economic and social justice. He also lays out a theology of the redemptive value of suffering. In our day when the behavior and attitudes of professed Christians are often not much different from the surrounding culture, in our society of great wealth, and in our culture that abhors suffering, the challenging message of James is greatly needed. Exploring the links between the Bible and our own times, David Nystrom shares perspectives on the book of James that reveal its enduring relevance for our twenty-first-century lives. This series promises to become an indispensable tool for every pastor and teacher who seeks to make the Bible's timeless message speak to this generation. Billy Graham The NIV Application Commentary dares to go where few scholars have gone before-into the real world of biblical application faced by pastors and teachers every day. This is everything a good commentary should be. Leith Anderson Pastor, Wooddale Church Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable-but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today.

Molly: 'Who the f**k is Madonna?' Madonna: 'What the f**k is a Molly?' More than thirty-five years in the making, this is the story of Ian 'Molly' Meldrum and the television show that stopped the nation. In 1974 Molly was working as a record producer and music journalist when he was offered the chance to be the talent co-ordinator of a new music show called Countdown. It would run for the next thirteen years and become one of the most-loved and most-watched programs on Australian television. It also turned Molly into a national institution The Pruning Specialist: The Essential Guide to Caring for Shrubs, Trees, Climbers, Hedges, Conifers, Roses and Fruit Trees download ebook pdf (or 'mental institution' as one of his friends put it). During that period he not only became the most influential voice in Australian music, he endeared himself to millions of viewers with a uniquely unpolished interviewing style and a tangible on-screen passion. For better or for worse, whether interviewing Prince Charles or Sid Vicious, Molly was always Molly. The Unfinished System of Nonknowledge download pdf, epub

Georges Bataille,Stuart Kendall,Michelle Kendall: The Unfinished System of Nonknowledge

The Unfinished System of Nonknowledge

Description

A deft reconstruction of what Georges Bataille envisioned as a continuation of his work La Somme Atheologique, this volume brings together the writings of one of the foremost French thinkers of the twentieth century on the central topic of his oeuvre. Gathering Bataille s most intimate writings, these essays, aphorisms, notes, and lectures on nonknowledge, sovereignty, and sacrifice clarify and extend Bataille s radical theology, his philosophy of history, and his ecstatic method of meditation. Following Bataille s lead, as laid out in his notebooks, editor Stuart Kendall assembles the fragments that Bataille anticipated collecting for his summa. Kendall s introduction offers a clear picture of the author s overall project, its historical and biographical context, and the place of these works within it. The "system" that emerges from these articles, notes, and lectures is "atheology," understood as a study of the effects of nonknowledge. At the other side of realism, Bataille s writing in La Somme pushes language to its silent end. And yet, writing toward the ruin of language, in search of words that slip from their meanings, Bataille uses language and the discourses of theology, philosophy, and literature against itself to return us to ourselves, endlessly. The system against systems is in fact systematic, using systems and depending on discourses to achieve its own ends the end of systematic thought.A medievalist librarian by training, Georges Bataille (1897 1962) was active in the French intellectual scene from the 1920s through the 1950s. He founded the journal Critique and was a member of the Acephale group and the College de Sociologie. Among his works available in English are Visions of Excess (Minnesota, 1985), Tears of Eros (1989), and Erotism (1990)."

It is 2007, and three supertankers are ablaze in the Strait of Hormuz. World oil prices skyrocket. US Military Intelligence concludes that behind this catastrophe at the gateway to the Persian Gulf stands Iran, assisted by an expansionist China. Joined by new, young naval intelligence officer Lt. Jimmy Ramshawe, Admiral Arnold Morgan threatens the Iranian Navy with annihilation, deploying the US Navy to Hormuz along with the nuclear submarine, USS Shark, carrying two teams of Navy SEALS. With the US Navy distracted, China is able to unleash an attack on Taiwan, America's weak ally. The situation is critical as mutiny occurs onboard the USS Shark, jeopardising the entire operation by preventing the SEALS from assisting the increasingly desperate Taiwanese Air force ... Known for his use of luminous color, Albert Handell, whose lush landscapes light up these pages, provides lucid instructions to help first-time pastelists achieve impressive results as soon as they begin working with the medium. After reviewing pastel supplies, the author discusses landscape composition and how to establish large shapes first, abstract certain areas, develop The Unfinished System of Nonknowledge download PDF a focal point, work from dark to light, and capture the illusion of reality through color. Stepped demonstrations isolate specific landscape aspects, showing how the pastelist depicts skies, trees, buildings, water, rocks, woods, snow, and light.

Sigurd Lewerentz, Architect: 1885-1975 download book

Janne Ahlin: Sigurd Lewerentz, Architect: 1885-1975

Sigurd Lewerentz, Architect: 1885-1975

Description

Sigurd Lewerentz (1885-1975) was initially educated as mechanical engineer in Gothenburg. Yet it was his architectural apprenticeship in Munich 1909-10 that set him on his path as an architect, opening his own office in Stockholm in 1911. Although his built work is relatively small, Lewerentz is revered as one of Sweden's most eminent architects. Cemeteries and sacred buildings became a core part of Lewerentz's oeuvre, including Stockholm's South Cemetery (1914-17), Malmo Eastern Cemetery (1916), St. Mark's Church, Bjorkhagen (1956), and Petri Church, Klippan (1963). In association with Gunnar Asplund, he was also the main architect for the Stockholm International Exhibition (1930), and in collaboration with Erik Lallerstedt and David Hellden he created a masterpiece of functionalist architecture, the Malmo City Theatre (1935). Sigurd Lewerentz, Architect is a reprint of the first ever monograph on his work, originally published in English 1987 and long out of print. It tells the story of Lewerentz's life and presents his entire work in text and many photographs, drawings and plans. The new edition is rounded out by a new essay on Lewrentz and his significance by the German-Chinese architect, critic, and professor, Wilfried Wang.

What is history and why should we study it? Is there such a thing as historical truth? Is history a science? One of the most accomplished historians at work today, John Lewis Gaddis, answers these and other questions in this short, witty, and humane book. The Landscape of History provides a searching look at the historian's craft, as well as a strong argument for why a historical consciousness should matter to us today. Gaddis points out that while the historical method is more sophisticated than most historians realize, it doesn't require unintelligible prose to explain. Like cartographers mapping landscapes, historians represent what they can never replicate. In doing so, they combine No Bullshit Social Media: The All-Business, No-Hype Guide to Social Media Marketing download epub the techniques of artists, geologists, paleontologists, and evolutionary biologists. Their approaches parallel, in intriguing ways, the new sciences of chaos, complexity, and criticality. They don't much resemble what happens in the social sciences, where the pursuit of independent variables functioning with static systems seems increasingly divorced from the world as we know it. So who's really being scientific and who isn't?

No Bullshit Social Media: The All-Business, No-Hype Guide to Social Media Marketing

Description

The In-Your-Face, Results-Focused, No-"Kumbaya" Guide to Social Media for Business! **Detailed techniques for increasing sales, profits, market share, and efficiency*Specific solutions for brand-building, customer service, R&D, and reputation management*Facts, statistics, real-world case studies, and rock-solid metrics Stop hiding from social media--or treating it as if it's a playground. Start using it strategically. Identify specific, actionable goals. Apply business discipline and proven best practices. Stop fearing risks. Start mitigating them. Measure performance. Get results. You can. This book shows you how. Jason Falls and Erik Deckers serve up practical social media techniques and metrics for building brands, strengthening awareness, improving service, optimizing R&D, driving better leads--and closing more sales. "Conversations" and "communities" are wonderful, but they're not enough. Get this book and get what you really want from social media: profits. Think social media's a passing fad? Too risky? Just a toy? Too soft and fuzzy? Not for your business? Wake up! It's where your customers are. And it ain't going away. Does that suck? No. It doesn't. Do social media right, and all those great business buzzwords come true. Actionable. Measurable. And...wait for it...here comes the big one. Profitable. Damn profitable. Want to know how to do it right? We'll show you. And, yeah, we know how because we've done it. This is the bullshit-free, lie-free, fluff-free, blessedly non-New-Age real deal. You're going to learn how to use social media to deliver absolutely killer customer service. How to R&D stuff people actually want. Develop scads of seriously qualified leads. You'll figure out what you want. You know, the little things like profits, market share, loyalty, and brand power. You'll figure out how to measure it. And then you'll go get it. One more thing. We know what scares you about social media. Screwing up (a.k.a., your mug on the front page of The Wall Street Journal). So we'll tell you what to do so that won't happen. Ever. No B.S. in this book. Just facts. Metrics. Best practices. Stuff to warm the hearts of your CFO, CEO, all your C-whatevers. And, yeah, you. So get your head out from under the pillow. Get your butt in gear. Let's go make some money.

Shop Cats of New York

Description

Humans of New York meets The French Cat in this carefully cultivated, gorgeous full-color collection featuring New York's iconic felines and the stories behind them. They inhabit New York City's most legendary and coziest spots-the Algonquin Hotel, a whiskey distillery, Bleecker Street Records, and a host of yoga studios, bookstores, and bike shops in between. True New Yorkers-masters of people watching-they perch on wine crates, piles of books, and a classic hotel countertop, taking in the activity around them. Depending on their mood, these cats will ignore enthusiastic admirers, offer a few delightful purrs, or occasionally even take a swipe. Some even find a mouse or two to chase. Shop Cats of New York introduces forty of New York's favorite felines-all who have an extraordinary story to tell. Popular cat blogger Tamar Arslanian and Instagram pet photographer Andrew Marttila capture these deeply loved and well cared for animals in their city habitat and reveal how they came to reign over their urban kingdoms. A celebration of some of the city's most revered citizens and a unique look at New York life, this enchanting illustrated volume is a must for every cat lover, and every Big Apple devotee.

Presents one-sentence examples of writing mistakes which provide teachers with what are often called daily oral language exercises that help students Shop Cats of New York download ebook master the basics of capitalisation, mechanics, punctuation, and usage. This book contains exercises that includes an at-a-glance summary of skills addressed. "NEW YORK TIMES "BESTSELLER What are the names of all those delicious apples that are often sold unlabeled at fruit and vegetable markets or that are piled up in all colors and shapes in the display cases at the entrance to the supermarket? They might be called Pink Lady, Empire or Firmgold - and you wonder which types originally gave rise to these hybrids. At any rate, it's been a long time since they originated exclusively in one country. Trying to distinguish between the many varieties of blue mold cheese takes more time than the lay person's patience will allow. Nevertheless, he would be happy to know wether or not a Blue Castello would be a tasty alternative to his favourite Danablu. And since Asian cooking styles have begun to enjoy enormous popularity, public interest in these exotic delicacies has increased immensely. However, the origins or uses of these ingredients in the kitchen are often still unknown. The well structured and highly informative reference book Ingredients provides help with all of these questions, identifies approximately 2,000 ingredients by name and describes their composition and uses.

Sheldrake and His Critics: The Sense of Being Glared at

Description

Rupert Sheldrake outraged the scientific establishment in the early 1980s with his hypothesis of morphic resonance: his book A New Science of Life was denounced by the journal Nature as 'the best candidate for burning there has been for many years'. With his academic career torpedoed, Sheldrake has become the champion of 'the people's science . Books such as Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home and The Sense of Being Stared At have won him popular acclaim and academic opprobrium in equal measure. In this special issue of the Journal of Consciousness Studies, Sheldrake summarizes his case for the non-visual detection of staring . His claims are scrutinised by fourteen critics, to whose commentaries he then responds. In his editorial introduction, Revd. Anthony Freeman explores the concept of heresy in science and in religion."

The wrecking of the Wager had surprisingly lasting effects on both the history of Chile and the administration of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, as this book tells. In 2006 the wreck was discovered by a British expedition, and it is now being studied by Chilean marine archaeologists. Here in the Wager's extraordinary story, is a record of human endurance and perseverance in the face of almost superhuman adversity.
